Established in the 19th century, the American Church in Berlin (ACB) is an ecumenical, international church in Berlin, Germany. It is located in the Luther Church on Dennewitzplatz, in the Schöneberg district.
The church is known for its warmth, and welcomes all newcomers and visitors to Berlin. ACB offers a wide range of religious, cultural, and social programs. Its members come from over 17 Christian denominations and over 30 different nations. Our church community is united by the Christian faith, English language, and a spirit of generosity that appreciates and rejoices in differences.
While ACB is an independent church, it enjoys close relationships with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the American and Foreign Christian Union (AFCU), the Association of International Churches in Europe, the Association of International Churches in Europe and the Middle East (AICEME), and the Evangelische Kirche in Berlin-Brandenburg (EKBO).
Working in and alongside the local community is an integral part of our mission and ministry. The Schöneberg district where the Luther Church is located is an economically depressed area, and is earmarked for urban regeneration. Many of the programs being planned at ACB are designed to encourage community investment in and around Dennewitzplatz.
ACB does not receive funds from the German system of church taxation (“Kirchensteuer”) due to its status as an independent church. The church’s yearly budget and finances are funded by ACB members and associated friends and supporters.
ACB is a registered non-profit association “gemeinnütziger eingetragener Verein” (e.V.) under German civil law. As a registered, tax-exempt church under German fiscal law, ACB is authorized to issue receipts for tax-deductible donations. With our partners in the USA, we are able to make it possible for givers outside of Germany to provide tax-exempt gifts.
The American Church in Berlin is “an ecumenical home for people from diverse nations sharing God’s love in Jesus Christ.” We embrace the unique opportunity to contribute to Berlin’s continued vibrancy, growth, and sustainability.
We invite you to visit us at Dennewitzplatz, and hope you will join us in our life-giving mission and ministry in the name of Jesus Christ.
