About the American Church in Berlin

     Established in the 19th century, the American Church in Berlin (ACB) is an ecumenical, international church located in Luther Church on Dennewitplatz in the Schoeneberg district of Berlin, Germany
(U2 - Bülowstrasse or S Bahn - Yorckstrasse).
     The church is known for its warmth and welcome to newcomers and visitors to Berlin.

  • ACB offers a wide range of religious, cultural and social programs.
  • ACB's members come from more than 17 Christian denominations and from more than 30 different nations.
  • ACB is united by Christian faith, the English language and a spirit of generosity that appreciates and rejoices in differences.

     As an independent church, ACB does not receive funds from the German system of church taxation ("Kirchensteuer"). The church's yearly budget and financing is funded by ACB members and associated friends and supporters.
     The origins of the church date back to about 1865, when American families met in private homes to worship. In the years after the founding of the "Kaiserreich" (1871) the church experienced rapid growth. In 1903 it was able to dedicate its own church building in the "American quarter" of Berlin-Schoeneberg, near Nollendorfplatz.
     The Nollendorfplatz church was destroyed in a bombing in 1944. The congregation continued from 1945 by sharing facilities with various German churches in Berlin-Zehlendorf.
While ACB is an independent church, it also has close relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), American and Foreign Christian Union (AFCU), the Association of International Churches in Europe, the Association of International Churches in Europe and the Middle East (AICEME)., and the Evangelische Kirche in Berlin-Brandenburg (EKBO).
     On November 8, 2002 ACB moved into the Luther Church, only meters away from the original sanctuary that was destroyed in 1944. Working in and with the local community is a great part of our mission and ministry. The district of Schoeneberg, in which the Luther Church is located, is an economically depressed area. It is earmarked for urban regeneration. Many of the programs being planned at ACB are designed to encourage investment in the community on and around Dennewitzplatz.
     ACB is a registered non-profit association "gemeinnütziger eingetragener Verein" (e.V.) under German civil law. As a registered, tax exempt church under German fiscal law ACB is authorized to issue receipts for tax deductible donations. With our partners in the USA, we are able to make it possible for givers outside of Germany to structure tax effective gifts.
     We hope that you are as enthusiastic about the American Church in Berlin 's ministry as we are. We want to embrace the opportunity to contribute to the vibrancy, growth and sustainability of Berlin and we hope you will join us. We invite you to visit the Luther Church at Dennewitzplatz, develop your own impression of the difference already being made and how much more can be done.
     The American Church in Berlin is "an ecumenical home for people from diverse nations sharing God's love in Jesus Christ."  We welcome you to browse our site. We invite you to join us in our life giving mission and ministry in the name of Jesus Christ.

Christ's Hands

Christ's Hands

"Christ has no body on earth but yours,

no hands but yours, no feet but yours;
yours are the eyes through which the compassion of Christ looks out on a hurting world,
yours are the feet with which he goes about doing good;

yours are the hands with which he is to bless now."

Teresa of Avila.
