at the American Church in Berlin


The Berlin premiere of  “Eternal, Victorious, Light,  a Jazz Passion and Resurrection” will occur at the American Church Berlin, Dennewitzplatz 1, Berlin on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at 6 p.m. (18:00 Uhr).  A reception with the musicians and composers will follow immediately after the concert at the church.  Tickets are free and can be obtained by contacting American Church in Berlin, +49 (0) 30 813 20 21, or  Diese E-Mail-Adresse ist vor Spambots geschützt! Composers Bobby Schiff, piano, and Andy Tecson, alto sax, along with Ken Jandes, tenor sax, will travel from Chicago to join an ensemble from the Jazz Department from the Hochschule  for Musik Theater and Medien Hannover, one of the great jazz programs in Germany, and a choir of the  Musik Schule Leipzig and the Heinrich-Schutz Konservatorium Dresden, e.V. led by the jazz singer Sabine Helmbold and the conductor from the jazz department of Hannover, Raphael Thöne, who will direct the piece.

The Jazz Passion is an hour long work written for choir, vocal quartet, several soloists, and twelve piece jazz ensemble.  Pastor David Abrahamson  wrote the libretto.  Bobby Schiff, Bobby Lewis and Andy Tecson composed the music. The Jazz Passion was premiered in March, 2010 at Saint Luke Lutheran Church in Chicago. This appears to be the first time that the Passion of Christ has been set to music using jazz.

Bobby Schiff ( ) has recorded and performed throughout the world as a pianist with artists such as Mel Torme, Peggy Lee and Marvin Hamlisch.  He has also served as a National Trustee and National Vice-President of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (The Grammy's). He has produced and written music for thousands of recording sessions.

Andy Tecson has led the ChurchJazz ensemble ( ) since 1982. His other compositions include the Jazz Psalms (commissioned by Dr. Martin E. Marty and premiered in 1982 at Valparaiso University), the Chicago Jazz Mass, and settings of more than a hundred hymns for jazz band and congregational singing.  The ChurchJazz band has been on television internationally on the BBC, nationally in the United States on CBS,  and performed at numerous churches and church assemblies throughout the United States. His Chicago Jazz Mass had its European premiere at the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche in Berlin in July, 2016. He has produced five CDs of the ChurchJazz Band.
